It will be hurricane season in September. Chances of a storm impacting us are very low, but we’re adding trip insurance to our rentals and recommend that you do the same.

Avon is about 4-4.5 hours from Richmond, VA. Driving is the only option.

We recommend staying in Avon, if possible, or anywhere from the north end of Avon to the east/north end of Frisco.

AirBnbs tend to be the best option and we’ll be there at the start of shoulder season, so there’s still lots of availability. Let us know if you run into any issues finding a good spot.

A note about beach access/driving

There are lots of places to get on to the beach (ocean- and sounds-side). Some have convenient parking and some require driving on the beach.

If we end up at any drive-out-only beaches, we’ll coordinate with you all to get you to the right spot. We will have a couple of beach-capable vehicles, so there’s no need to drive on the beach if you don’t want to.

But if you do…

  • Get a permit.

  • 4WD is not technically required for an ORV permit, but it should be considered absolutely necessary. Tires with tall sidewalls that can be driven at low psi (around 20) are also crucial. Don’t risk it with a crossover AWD SUV.

  • Take the signage and warnings as you approach the beach access points seriously. You will certainly get stuck in the sand if you’re in an inappropriate vehicle, or even in the right vehicle that’s not properly prepared (drop your tire pressure to 20 psi). The beach tow truck business has very high profit margins…
